Eye Centre

The Ophthalmology Unit at the Caucasus Medical Centre is equipped with the latest modern diagnostic/treatment equipment and a team of highly qualified, experienced doctors provides patients with complete diagnosis and treatment of eye pathologies.

 

The Department offers the treatment of the following pathologies in accordance with international guidelines and protocols and to the highest quality standards:
 

  • Senile, congenital and diabetic cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye);
  • Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism;
  • Glaucoma; 
  • Diabetic retinopathy;
  • Keratoconus (degenerative disease of the cornea)
  • Chalazion (inflamed mass on the eyelid);
  • New growths on the eyelid;
  • Pterygium (a benign overgrowth of the mucous membrane of the eye);
  • Strabismus;
  • Dry eye syndrome;
  • Various ocular inflammatory diseases: conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis, scleritis, episcleritis;
  • Traumatic eye injuries.

     

The Ophthalmology Department performs advanced, high-tech and complex surgical treatments, namely:
 

  • Phacoemulsification of senile, congenital and diabetic cataracts with implantation of artificial lens;
  • Glaucoma surgery: anterior chamber shunt implantation; trabeculotomy with iridectomy; trabeculoplasty;
  • Laser correction of refractive errors;
  • Anterior Vitrectomy;
  • Extended vitrectomy - removal of the vitreous;
  • Corneal transplantation;
  • Surgical treatment of various stages of keratoconus;
  • Emergency surgery - in case of any kind of traumatic damage to the eyeball;
  • Pterygium excision and conjunctiva transplantation;
  • Surgery on the tear ducts: transnasal dacryocystorhinostomy (connecting the lacrimal sac to the nasal cavity); dacryocystectomy (excision of the lacrimal sac);
  • Reconstructive surgery of the eyelids: Removal of the fibrous cartilage and skin of the eyelid due to the eyelid turning outwards, i.e. ectropion; combined correction of entropion (eyelid turned inwards); plastic surgery of the eyelids;
  • Evisceration (removal of parts of the eye - keeping the eye frame) and enucleation (removal of the whole eye);
  • Dissection of chalazion (chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands of the eyelid).

     

In order to timely detect the disease and plan further treatment, it is recommended to undergo an ophthalmological consultation and an instrumental examination from the age of 0. In order to prevent vision impairment, it is recommended that individuals undergo an annual ophthalmological examination, even in the absence of any symptoms. 

 

Furthermore, there exists a range of symptoms that necessitate medical consultation, including:

 

  • Blurring/deterioration of vision;
  • Eye pain, foreign body sensation in the eye;
  • Eye injury;
  • Diabetes and arterial hypertension;
  • Strabism;
  • Floaters and flashes in the eyes.
