The Thoracic Surgery Centre

The department of Thoracic Surgery at the Caucasus Medical Center provides both planned and emergency management of pathological chest disorders.

The Thoracic Surgery Unit is staffed by a team of experienced doctors who frequently attend local and international conferences and congresses, keeping abreast of the latest medical developments and providing high-quality services in accordance with the latest international standards.

The Department uses such examination methods as:

  • Video-mediastinoscopy (a mini-invasive procedure for diagnosing the pathology of mediastinal lymph nodes) - it allows the early detection of tumours and lymphadenopathy;
  • Thoracoscopic biopsy.

The Department successfully performs:

  • Minimally invasive thoracoscopic treatment of thoracic pathologies;
  • Treatment of open and closed chest injuries;
  • Treatment of mediastinal injuries;
  • Thoracoscopic treatment of all types of pneumothorax, hemothorax and hydrothorax;
  • Treatment of congenital chest malformations;
  • Open and thoracoscopic treatment of pulmonary, mediastinal and pleural diseases;
  • Thoracoscopic treatment of empyema (collection of pus) and post-pneumonia pleurisy (dissolution of fluid collections confined to the chest cavity, excision by thoracoscopic method);

In addition, the Caucasus Medical Centre performs thoracoscopic treatment of malignant lung tumours using uniportal thoracoscopic approaches (with a small incision of 2.5 - 5 cm), which have the following advantages compared to open surgery: short rehabilitation period, reduction of postoperative pain, positive cosmetic effect and short hospital stay.

In order to facilitate the timely detection of the pathology and subsequent effective management, it is imperative to seek consultation with a medical professional in the event of the manifestation of the following symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath;
  • Pain in the chest area;
  • Bleeding cough;
  • Unexplained weight loss;
  • General weakness.

In addition, as a preventative measure, it is advisable to cease the use of nicotine-containing or replacement products. Additionally, from the age of 45, it is recommended that patients who smoke and have an oncological history undergo a chest X-ray.
