Proctology Centre

 

The Proctology Department at the Caucasus Medical Centre offers a comprehensive diagnostic service and provides both outpatient and surgical treatment for pathologies of the colon, rectum and anus.

 

The Department employs the following diagnostic methods:
 

  • Digital rectal examination;
  • Anoscopy;
  • Proctoscopy;
  • Colonoscopy (endoscopic examination of the inner lining of the colon and rectum);
  • Sigmoidoscopy (endoscopic examination of the inner surface of the rectum and sigmoid colon);
  • Biopsy, if necessary.

 

The Proctology Department is staffed by a team of experienced, highly qualified doctors who treat the following pathologies in accordance with international standards:
 

  • Hemorrhoids, prolapsed haemorrhoids (enlarged cavernous corpuscles in the anal region, complicated by prolapse, bleeding or thrombosis. Causes pain and unpleasant sensations in the anus, with frequent bleeding - anaemia);
  • Chronic and acute anal fissure (characterised by pain, bloody discharge, cramping, discomfort and itching);
  • Paraproctitis (inflammation of the tissues surrounding the rectum);
  • Rectal fistula (develops after an acute purulent process and is characterised by periodic discharge from the perianal area, common complaints are: itching and wetness in the anus area, rarely - pain and fever); 
  • Pilonidal sinus disease/pilonidal cyst (an infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue that usually develops near the coccyx, above the crease of the buttocks).

 

In terms of surgical treatment, the following procedures are successfully performed in the clinic:
 

  • Ligation for Hemorrhoids;
  • Botulinum toxin injections in the perianal area;
  • Treatment of acute purulent inflammatory processes and others.

 

In order to prevent the development of diseases and ensure early detection and effective treatment, the Caucasus Medical Centre participates in a free state programme and conducts colon cancer screening for patients aged 50 to 70.

 

A number of symptoms should prompt consultation with a physician, including the following:
 

  • Prolapsed hemorrhoids;
  • Pain in the anal area during or after defecation;
  • Bloody discharge from the anal canal; 
  • Purulent discharge from the tissues around the anus; 
  • Swelling in the aforementioned areas;
  • Coccyx pain and swelling.

 

To minimize the likelihood of developing proctological diseases, the physician recommends the following measures:
 

  • Eat foods high in fiber and follow the recommended diet;
  • Drink enough water during the day;
  • avoid sitting for long periods;
  • Refrain from consuming spicy foods and alcohol.
